Field Trip Follow-up Tips
For Teachers and Parents
Ask your child/student what they learned about building a plate of food? You can see our MYPLATE recommendation here (PDF). Fueling the body correctly is an important step in achieving a healthy lifestyle. Many students are not eating breakfast regularly, and filling up on “junk food” instead of food high in nutrient value. These habits lead to low energy levels, lack of focus and irritability. The plate represents a single meal containing fruits and vegetable, protein and healthy fats. The portions on the plate help to illustrate how much of each component to include.
We also discussed RPE Charts or – perceived rate of exertion (PDF). During each exercise station the students experienced different ways to get moving. Based on how hard the activity and how hard they were working, they would rate the activity on a scale of 1 to 10: 1 - not very hard. 10 - extremely hard. Ask them how they would rate each of the activities they participated in.
One of our themes presented is 9-5-2-1-0 : 5 steps geared toward making healthy lifestyle decisions. Each of these would be great topics of conversation at the dinner table.
- Getting 9 hours of sleep
- Eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day
- Limiting screen time (TV, computer, phone) to 2 hours a day
- Getting 1 hour of exercises
- Consuming 0 sugary drinks
