Wendell Phillips Athletic Director Credits Academy Fastpitch Staff

05/30/2012 10:14 AM - During the off-season, Bulls/Sox Academy Director of Fastpitch Operations, Kathy Young, and Academy instructor, Kate Contreras, held a 3-week fundamental clinic to teach students at Wendell Phillips Academy the game of softball. At the conclusion of the clinic it was clear that the girls gained a wealth of softball knowledge and improved in all aspects of the game.

How much did that improvement carry over to their season? Apparently a great deal as the Wildcats went on to a conference championship and an undefeated conference record of 14-0.

Academy Coach, Kathy Young had a feeling the girls would have success this season, “I saw an improvement in every player, and I believe the Wildcats will take what we taught them to the game and play with confidence,” Coach Young said after the clinic. The lady Wildcats did just that!

Wendell Phillips Athletic Director, John Byrne, had high praise for Coach Young and her staff and the way they were able to contribute to the success of these young ladies. “It goes without saying that this would not have been possible without the invaluable help the Bulls/Sox Academy Fastpitch Softball staff provided us this spring with their clinic,” Byrne said, “It was truly one of the best clinics I have ever been to in 40 years of coaching sports. The connection Kathy and her staff made with the girls engendered such a response that the lessons they provided were well received and lasting.”

Byrne continued to say, “The girls are overjoyed with the success they have had in just their second year of playing softball and are excited about their future in the game. The Academy Fastpitch Softball staff helped everyone here from our coaches to our players realize what they can accomplish. Being an inner city high school I do not know if we will ever again be able to avail ourselves of a program such as yours but you can rest assured that the lessons Kathy and her staff taught us will go a long way with our group.”

The Wendell Phillips Wildcats will go on to face Evergreen Park High School in Westchester in the State Tournament. The Bulls/Sox Academy and the entire Fastpitch Softball staff wish them the best of luck moving forward!
