17u Premier Bulls Smash NAYS Tournament in Mount Prospect with 5-0 Performance

07/15/2011 3:43 PM -

After a week off the 17u Bulls Premier squad was back in action at a North American Youth Sports (NAYS) tournament located in Mount Prospect, IL. Overall, the Bulls matched up well against every team competing in the tournament. They swept all 3 games in pool play by defeating the Roadrunners 48-39, Lake Front All Stars 51-42, and the Hurricanes 78-36. This gave them the advantage of playing the Hurricanes in a semi-final game, which they handled well by beating them again, but this time was a 61-44 victory. The only team left standing in the Bulls way of a championship title was the Lake Front All Stars, who they beat by 9 in pool play. Coach Brockington noted that this was the most confident and aggressive group in the tournament. They rotated 4 solid guards that could get to the rim as well as hit from deep on a consistent basis. This was also the only team that the coaching staff thought might give the Bulls a run for their money.

Even though the Bulls never trailed in the championship game, they had to overcome some humps to essentially win the game 2-3 times. The Bulls had a lead as large as 13 in the first half but saw it dwindle to 6 at the halftime buzzer. Then the team came out strong from the locker room and built it back to a 12 point lead, but the Lake Front All Stars cut it back to 5. Finally the Bulls Premier worked the lead to as high as 15 with just two minutes remaining; however the Lake Front All Stars were not going away without a fight. Some immaturity resulted in bad decisions, wasted possessions, and miscues, which led to a 3 point Bulls lead with 2 seconds to go. The Bulls missed the first free throw of a 1 and 1 situation, but with the Lake Front All Stars out of timeouts, they were forced to take a full court 3-point attempt.

Congratulations to the 17u Premier team for winning all five games in their tournament, the squad will play in the Walker Athletics tournament in Lisle, IL, starting on July 22nd.
