14u Team Has Great Showing at the Monsters of the Midwest

06/09/2011 1:06 PM - The 8th grade Bulls Premier team definitely showed up to play at the Fieldhouse in Merrillville, Indiana this past weekend. Overcoming the same problems that have plagued the team in past early morning games, the Premier squad out executed a more physical and aggressive team from Michigan City, Indiana. Ending the game on a 12-2 run, the Bulls Premier pulled out a 57-47 victory early Saturday morning.

The second pool play proved to be a tougher match up against a team that they have seen before, the Meanstreets. “We said we were ready but we got pushed, grabbed, and gave the ball up way too much in the backcourt,” said Coach Kevin Brockington. He also detailed that the man to man offense consisted of standing and watching, which typically will not work against a longer, more athletic team. The result of the game was a 62-34 loss, similar to the first match up between these teams.

Facing another 8am start time, the first playoff game went as well as it could have. Showing mental toughness and a readiness to play aggressive basketball was the key to a 57-52 win over the Illinois Blue Ice. Making the extra pass, utilizing all five players on the floor, and executing the set plays allowed the Bulls Premier to stretch a 10 point lead into 14. However the Blue Ice made a push and tied the game late, but it was not enough to overcome the stellar play of the Premier.

Finally, the Bulls Premier team would run in to a team that was too much to handle. The ACB team from Michigan averaged 6’1’’ in height and had two front line guys that were 6’4’’ and 6’7’’. Down as many as 20 in a semi-final elimination game, the Premier team cut the lead to as little as 10. In the end, Coach Brockington noted that they defended, played physical, and executed like they were supposed to, overall a quality effort by the 8th grade Bulls Premier squad as they finished the tournament 2-2.

On another note, the 8th grade boys swept all 3 of their Academy league games in stunning fashion. They defeated the Impact (Navy & Orange) and Wild Knights by a combined 64 points, with each game being a double digit victory. Congrats to the team on a 5-2 weekend and keep up the good work!
